Mrs. Jones’ Curriculum Newsletter

November 15 – December 22

Religion – Our month will revolve around Advent and the coming of Our Lord into the world and our lives.  The children will make a special gift to our school community by depicting the Birth of Jesus.

Language Arts

Reading – The class will read various articles about the American Indian tribes and their environment.  We will concentrate on the Northeast as that will be the region we will study this month in Social Studies.  The children will work on additional skills utilizing comprehension, vocabulary, and fact or opinion.

English  – Our study will include working with verbs and a continuation of the study of the writing process.   December will also find the class working on drama skills.

Penmanship – All work should be done in cursive writing.  The children will continue to practice and improve writing skills.

Mathematics   

Grade 3 – Addition and Subtraction of three and four digit numbers.  The children will work with one or more place renaming.  Multiplication concepts will also be introduced this month.  Please check homework, as children need reinforcement of these skills.

Grade 4 - Algebra use with multiplication and division will be stressed this month.  We will continue to work on computation of various multiplication problems.  Please work with your student on problem solving using multiple steps.

Science  – We will culminate our study of water and weather.  The children will be introduced to the classification of living things.  Then we will continue with our study of how animals survive and begin our endangered species project.

Social Studies – In this unit on the Northeast, students will be introduced to the landforms, climate, culture, natural resources, and industry found here.  We will research the Native American tribes who lived in this region and make a class poster.

Special Notes:

1.  Field Trip on November 30th- Mrs. Lynch and Mrs. Jones’ classes will be going to the Indian Museum in Warner.

2.  Christmas Play – Our class will be working on the play of the Birth of Jesus to be presented the week before Christmas.  Please rehearse with your student, as the parts need to be memorized.

3.  The Christmas Play will be held on December 16th in the morning!

4.  December Book Reports – Due on December 13th.  The report is on a Christmas Book.   The children will create an Advent Calendar using the important aspects of the book to illustrate their pictures and add sentences.
