Mrs. Jones’ Curriculum Objectives

October 4 – November 8

Religion – We will begin our study of the Rosary and the Mysteries.  Please send a rosary with your child so they can actively participate in the praying of the rosary.  We will learn the Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries.  We will culminate our study of the Beatitudes by creating a classroom book explaining how they impact our lives!

Language Arts

Reading – Skill development will include:  characterization, compound words, story setting, identifying the main idea and supporting details, and drawing conclusions from our reading selections.  We will also work on vocabulary and comprehension with our science research selection—Twisters and Other Terrible Storms by Mary Pope Osborne.

English – We will be concentrating on nouns, nouns in sentences, singular and plural nouns, and names and addresses.  We will explore the dictionary; introducing the use of guide words and finding entry words corresponding to our social studies, science, and reading curriculum.

Mathematics

Grade 3 – Three and four-digit addition and subtraction will be the skills stressed this month.  Students will do problems with and without regrouping.  The children will use mental math to find the sum of two numbers.

Grade 4 – Skills will include practicing multiplication and division facts.  Concentrate on multiplication properties and order of operations.  Review multiplication of two and three digit numbers.  Introduce multiplication with regrouping using two-digits by two- digit factors.

Social Studies – Students will understand that the United States is divided into five regions.  Each region has states that share certain traits.  For example, regions share like landforms, climate, industry, and culture.

Science – The children are continuing their study weather.  The students will continue to read about various kinds of storms and extreme weather conditions.  A science activity afternoon will involve making some of the weather instruments we are learning in class.

Technology  – Technology will be integrated throughout curriculum areas.  The students have also started a keyboarding class taught by Mrs. Tierno.  This keyboarding class is every Tuesday afternoon for an hour.  Please have students practice their drills at home.
