Mrs. Jones’ Class Curriculum Objectives

August 29 – October 3

 Religion-       Our year will begin by revealing Jesus-the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  How do we live our lives showing Jesus in ourselves?  The end of the month will begin our study of the Beatitudes.

October- The children will pray a decade of the rosary everyday.  All students need a rosary for October.

Language Arts

Reading- Student skill development will emphasize learning about details/facts, plot, drawing conclusions, and characterization.  We will integrate our reading with the unit on weather that we are studying in science.

English- Grammar will emphasize learning about sentence structure and the four kinds of sentences.  We will identify subjects and predicates.  Students will learn about writing paragraphs and editing their work.

Vocabulary and Spelling- Our study in this area will be a two week cycle.  In the first week, the children will receive their word list to study for spelling.  The second week will involve activities to master the definitions and word usage.   Please help your student study for these tests nightly.

Penmanship- We will introduce cursive penmanship and begin practice of individual letters.  Students who have mastered cursive will be practicing with handwriting papers to analyze their letter formation.

Science – Water and weather will be the emphasis of our study of science.  We will master our study of the water cycle and its effects in our lives.  Further weather study will include conditions in the atmosphere, air pressure, humidity, and clouds.  We will study the facts and learn new concepts through experiments and demonstrations.  See our Project List for information on our cloud poster project!

Mathematics

Grade 3  We will review addition and subtraction facts to 20.  Students will take timed tests with 100 addition problems.  When the addition timed test is passed with 100% accuracy the student moves onto subtraction.  We will continue work on place value- ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.  We will work on rounding numbers and greater than/lesser than skills.  A key skill stressed this year will be problem solving.

Grade 4  Students will review place value –to hundred-thousand and millions.  We will continue the study of rounding numbers and comparing whole numbers.  Students will problem solve using double-digit addition and subtraction.  Please concentrate on subtracting across zeroes.

Social Studies- Maps and globes will be the topic for the beginning of the year.  Students will understand the characteristics and uses of maps, globes, and other geographic tools and techniques.  We will learn location of places, geographic features, and patterns of the environment.  We will culminate the unit by making our own globes.

Book Reports-     The children should be reading everyday for at least twenty minutes.  The children need to work on book reports at home.  The list of types of books to be read for the reports and the dates due are provided on a separate paper.  The list will also be available on our web page.

Special Notes

  1. September 28th- The September Book Report is due.
  2. October 3rd- Children should bring in their rosaries.  We will be praying the rosary in October and will recite a decade a day.
  3. October 5th – The Cloud Project is due.
